Privacy Policy
justOBD is built to be private by design. It works entirely on your phone and the Bluetooth adapter you connect — we operate no servers that receive your data, and we do not require an account.
Who we are & scope
This Privacy Policy explains how the justOBD mobile application ("justOBD", "the app", "we", "us") handles information when you use it on iOS or Android.
This policy covers the app only. It does not cover the third-party Bluetooth OBD adapter hardware you choose to use, your vehicle, or any operating-system services provided by Apple or Google.
The short version
justOBD does not collect, transmit, or sell your personal data. There is no sign-up, no cloud account, and no analytics or advertising SDK in the app. Diagnostic information read from your vehicle stays on your device and is only sent over a direct Bluetooth link between your phone and your OBD adapter.
Data the app processes on your device
To do its job, justOBD reads information from your vehicle through the connected adapter and processes it locally on your phone. This may include:
- Vehicle diagnostic data — fault codes (DTCs), control-module identifiers and status, and freeze-frame data.
- Live engine parameters — values such as RPM, speed, engine load, coolant and oil temperature, throttle position, fuel level and module voltage.
- Vehicle identifiers — the VIN and odometer reading, where the vehicle exposes them.
- App preferences — settings such as language and units, and the identifier of the last adapter you paired, stored so the app can reconnect.
This information is processed to display diagnostics to you and is stored only in the app's local storage on your device. It is never sent to us or to any third party.
What we do not collect
- No name, email address, phone number, or account credentials — there is no account.
- No advertising identifiers, no behavioural tracking, no usage analytics.
- No precise or background location logging (see permissions below).
- No contacts, photos, microphone, or other personal content.
- We do not build user profiles and we do not sell or rent data to anyone.
Device permissions we request
The app requests the minimum permissions needed to talk to your adapter. Each is used only for the purpose described:
- Bluetooth — required to discover and connect to your ELM327-compatible BLE OBD adapter and exchange diagnostic data with it.
- Nearby devices (Android 12+) — used solely to scan for and connect to the Bluetooth adapter. We do not derive your location from it.
- Location (Android 11 and below) — older Android versions require location permission to allow Bluetooth LE scanning. justOBD uses it only to enable that scan; it does not collect, store, or transmit your location.
On iOS, only Bluetooth permission is requested. You can revoke any permission at any time in your device settings; some features will stop working without Bluetooth access.
Storage, security & retention
All data the app uses is stored locally on your device using the operating system's standard app storage, which is sandboxed to justOBD. Because nothing is uploaded, there is no server-side copy of your data to breach.
You remain in control: you can clear saved data from within the app where offered, and deleting the app removes all of its locally stored data from your device.
Third-party services
The app itself contains no third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs. The only external parties involved are the app stores you download from — Apple App Store and Google Play — which process download and, if you choose to pay in the future, purchase information under their own privacy policies. We receive only aggregate, non-identifying store statistics.
Children's privacy
justOBD is a vehicle-diagnostics tool intended for adult vehicle owners and technicians. It is not directed at children, and because the app collects no personal data, it does not knowingly process any information from children.
Your rights
Privacy laws such as the GDPR and CCPA give you rights over personal data a company holds about you. Because justOBD stores everything locally and we hold no personal data about you on any server, there is nothing for us to export, correct, or delete on our side — you control all app data directly on your device. If you believe we hold data about you, you can contact us using the details below.
Changes to this policy
If the app's data practices change, we will update this page. Material changes will be highlighted within the app or its store listing. Continued use of the app after an update means you accept the revised policy.
